Guts, his massive sword resting on his shoulder, locked eyes with Judge Holden, whose pale, hairless figure seemed almost ethereal in the fading light.
"This place reeks of death," he growled, his voice a deep rumble against the silence.
"Death is but a door, my friend," the Judge replied, his voice smooth and unnervingly calm. "A door we all must walk through."
Guts tightened his grip on his sword, the weight of his past battles etched into his scarred face. "I've seen what lies beyond that door, and it's not a path I'd choose again," he countered, his eyes narrowing.
Judge Holden, unmoved, spread his arms wide as if to embrace the oncoming storm. "Fate is indifferent to choice, warrior. It is we who must bend to its will, not the other way around."
Guts felt the familiar thrill of battle coursing through his veins. "You speak of fate as if it's a master we must all serve, but I've made my own path," he declared, his voice rising above the gathering storm.
Judge Holden smiled, a cold, mirthless expression. "And yet here you stand, drawn to this place like a moth to flame. Perhaps your path was not so different after all."
With a roar, Guts lunged forward, his massive sword cleaving the air. The ground shook with the force of his attack, dust and rain mingling in the aftermath.
Judge Holden moved with a fluid grace, dodging the strike and countering with a swift, almost ethereal motion. "Violence begets violence, and so the cycle continues," he mused, his voice barely audible over the storm.
Guts, unyielding, pressed on, each swing of his sword a testament to his defiance. "If the cycle is never broken, then what hope is there for any of us?" he shouted, his voice raw with determination.
Judge Holden, ever calm, replied, "Hope is a construct of the weak. The strong embrace the chaos."
Guts, weary but unbroken, looked at Judge Holden with a new understanding. "Perhaps you're right about fate, but I still choose to fight against it," he said, his voice steady.
Judge Holden nodded, a rare flicker of respect in his eyes. "Then fight you shall, warrior. Until the end."
