Sam Holloway stood before the mirror, .stomach pushing against his shirt, his cheeks round and eyes weary. The world outside was just waking up, but inside, time felt stuck. He brushed a hand over his shiny scalp, sighing as he remembered all the failed attempts at change. "This can't be all there is," he whispered to his reflection, voice tinged with defeat and a faint flicker of hope.
Sam stepped into the gym, his heart pounding with nerves as he eyed the muscular regulars. He gripped a towel tightly, feeling invisible and exposed all at once. The clang of weights was intimidating, but he forced himself to step onto the treadmill. "Just one step at a time, Sam. Don't quit this time," he muttered, pressing 'Start' and feeling the belt move beneath his feet.
Sam collapsed onto his couch, muscles aching, stomach growling for old comforts like burgers and fries. The TV flickered with images of bodybuilders, their strength both inspiring and daunting. He picked up his phone, scrolling through progress photos that seemed to show only tiny changes. "Maybe it's pointless," he groaned, the urge to give in nearly overwhelming.
A trainer approached Sam, smiling with genuine warmth. Jordan, the trainer, was tall, lean, and carried an air of approachable authority. "I see you here every day, Sam. You keep showing up, even when it's hard. That's what matters. Let me help you push through this wall,""I just want to feel proud of myself. I want to be someone different," Sam replied, voice cracking slightly.
Sam admired his reflection, running a finger over his new mustache, marveling at the firmness of his jaw. The once-lost look in his eyes had been replaced by quiet confidence. He flexed, tracing the outline of new muscles that told the story of every drop of sweat, every meal resisted. "You did it. You really did it," he said, voice trembling with emotion.
Sam stood tall, chest out, nerves replaced by pride. The applause washed over him as he looked into the crowd and caught Jordan's thumbs-up. For the first time, Sam truly believed in the man he had become. "This is only the beginning," he whispered to himself, smiling as the curtain fell.
