Ava clutches her backpack straps, her big brown eyes scanning the crowd. Her cozy sweater is a splash of turquoise against the sea of school spirit shirts. She hesitates by the gym door, her gaze drawn to a soccer ball graphic on a distant bulletin board.
"Maybe today, I’ll try something different," she whispers to herself, her voice barely audible over the morning rush.
Ava steps tentatively toward the soccer practice. The others notice her arrival, their chatter pausing for a split second. She feels their curious glances, her cheeks warming as she pushes her glasses up her nose.
"Hi, I’m Ava... is this the soccer group?" Her question hangs in the air, met by a few polite nods and one enthusiastic wave from a boy with wild curly hair.
Ava struggles to keep up at first, stumbling as she chases after the ball. The other kids call out plays, their voices quick and confident, while she fumbles with her footing. Determined, she grits her teeth and focuses on the ball, remembering how much she loves the game.
"You can do this, Ava," she mutters under her breath, her eyes shining with resolve as she sprints back into position.
She kicks the ball with every ounce of courage she can gather, watching as it zips past the goalkeeper and into the net. Cheers erupt from a small corner of the field. For the first time, Ava feels the thrill of being seen, her smile wide and genuine.
"Did you see that? I actually scored!" she exclaims, laughing with delight.
A girl with a ponytail grins at her, introducing herself as Mia, and another boy offers Ava a spot in their after-school basketball group. They talk animatedly, swapping tips and encouragement, making Ava feel welcome in a way she hadn’t expected.
"We love soccer and basketball too! You should totally join us next time," Mia says, her tone bright and sincere.
She realizes she doesn’t need to fit in with everyone—she just needs to be herself. Surrounded by friends who share her passion, she finally feels at home. The sparkle in her eyes is brighter than ever, ready for whatever adventure comes next.
"I think I’ve found my place," she says softly, her smile warm and certain.
