Jamie stands near the entrance, clutching a crisp white gi that still bears the folds from its packaging. Rows of trophies gleam along the far wall, and colorful belts hang in orderly lines like silent promises. Jamie's heart beats faster as a bell chimes, signaling the start of class.
Sensei Kim, the instructor, bows deeply to the new students. "Welcome, everyone. Today, you begin a journey of discipline, strength, and respect. Let us start by learning the bow—a sign of gratitude and humility." Jamie mimics the gesture, feeling both awkward and exhilarated.
"We begin with the ready stance. Feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent, hands at your sides," Sensei Kim instructs, demonstrating with perfect form. Jamie tries to mirror every motion, feeling the unfamiliar stretch in their muscles and the thrill of doing something entirely new.
"Remember, speed is nothing without control. Focus your mind, and the body will follow," Sensei Kim calls out. Jamie stumbles on the second attempt, fists too tight, face burning with embarrassment. A nearby classmate offers an encouraging nod, and Jamie tries again, determined to improve.
Sensei Kim approaches Jamie, offering a gentle correction to their stance. "You’re stronger than you think. Trust yourself," she says quietly. With renewed focus, Jamie finds the rhythm, executing a punch that lands with a satisfying snap.
Jamie gathers their things, cheeks flushed and spirit soaring. "Thank you, Sensei. I can't wait for next week," Jamie says, voice brimming with excitement. As Jamie steps outside into the cool evening, the world feels just a little bigger, and their confidence, a little brighter.
