Sidney Hawk stood at the entrance of the Adequan Barn, her breath visible in the crisp morning air. The rows of stalls were alive with quiet anticipation, horses shifting and nickering softly as the first rays of light streamed through the open doors. Lots of contestants her age were there for the same reason, to show off their skills and horses. She clutched a canvas tool kit filled with brushes, rubber bands, a hoof pick and other grooming supplies in one hand, her hat bucket in the other. Her heart already beating a little faster with the excitement and nerves of the upcoming show.
Sidney approached her horse, Tj Smokin Silverado, who greeted her with his signature smile and a gentle nudge. She ran a soothing hand down Tj's neck, feeling the soft warmth of his coat. "Good morning, buddy. Ready to shine today?" Tj snorted, shaking his mane as if in agreement, and Sidney smiled, feeling a little of her own anxiety melt away.
Sidney worked methodically, brushing Tj, removing the sawdust from his hair from his nights nap until his coat gleamed. She carefully picked out each hoof, checking for stones or mud, then moved on to polish the bridle and saddle, making sure every buckle shone. "You’ll be the most handsome one out there, I promise," she whispered, her voice steady with affection.
Sidney adjusted Tj's saddle pad and tightened the girth, double-checking each strap. Pinned his number on given for the show judges to identify them. She adjusted the rubber band braid she always gave Tj on his forelock and began preparing herself for the event, her face set with a look of determination. "We’ve down this a hundred times in practiced and I know, no matter what happens, you're going to give it your all and we're a team," she said, her hand resting on Tj's shoulder.
Leading Tj by the reins, Sidneyfirst walked, then mounted Tj for the long distance required to reach the show arena. Other horses and riders joined her along the way, all sharing the same mixture of anticipation and hope. Sidney took a deep breath, feeling the cool, clean air fill her lungs, and gave Tj an encouraging pat.
Sidney led Tj through the gate, heart pounding as she heard her name announced over the loudspeaker. She remounted smoothly, settling into the saddle as Tj pranced beneath her, muscles tense and ready. "Let’s show them what we can do, buddy," she murmured, feeling the strength of their partnership in every heartbeat as they prepared to ride into the spotlight together.
